Repo Exposure

Hey Satsuoni,

I wanna start off by saying thank you for creating this fork! I am sure a lot of people have benefited from it's use.

That being said, with it being the only route (outside of having an actual Kindle) that I know of, and with the plethora of people who have been asking for help in removing the DRMs... would you be okay with it being advertised if it was done safely?

To be honest, I have suggested it to quite a few people but it seems the more I try to help, the more I see people struggle and I would love to help where I can.

I admit to being conflicted, since, yes, Amazon is more likely to do something, and more people means more questions that I feel I already answered the majority of... What do you mean by advertising it safely, anyway? You are already recommending it to people and there are guides out there...

Indeed, they specifically targeted the approach I went with for K4PC 2.7, so they are probably watching. There are only 3 main deDRM repos, after all. But since they no longer allow download of "high-security" books on K4PC anyway, I guess the pressure from the managers is not high enough to release more versions for now. I do fully expect them to cover at least part of the approach next time.

That said, certainly copy the repo around, it is good to have backups, if nothing else. (Attribution would be appreciated, though). And since over two months passed from the release, a bit more exposure will probably not hurt anymore. The method is somewhat of a pain, though, and I am pretty much done explaining it, given existing discussions (and variety of edge cases that I have no way of duplicating).

Once this method is posted on reddit for example. chances are It will reach more exposure. Are you OK with this?

Currently the Tutorial and Python script I made to ease the use of your tool is only linked In one post in this repo, and per the counter of the Tutorial Blog Post 6K visits to that single post have been recorded.

Your alias (Satsuoni) has already been dropped on a post on reddit granted no direct link to this repo was given, and the question of why a direct link was not given was raised.

From the conversation seen on the thread the question to ask you directly if you are opposed to sharing this repo link was also raised.

Those that find my Tutorial will find your repo link directly since it's your Tool.

But I do not advertise or give guidance to find your repo or my Tutorial anywhere.

If you have no issues then pointing ppl to your repo or my Tutorial when they ask for help and maybe after a little history check of the person's profile. A nudge in the correct direction may be given.

I still rather point them to the paid epubor application 🤣 If they where tech savvy to use deDRM they would have found your repo regardless. 🤷🏻‍♂️

To be honest, I have a copy of your tutorial on a seperate site (with a link back to the repo) so it's not directly linked back to you. I also am working on a way to post it on a docker so it's not linked back to me. That alone allows me to see who accesses what, when, and how.

If there is any other suggestions, I am willing to listen and see what can be done. I am not incrediby tech savvy so I admit my methods have some flaws but I am sure as a community we can come up with a solution to protect the repo as much as possible.

While it should be entirely Satsuoni's decision, I personally think it may not be wise to share the details on Reddit but rather provide the nudge in the right direction as Jadehawk said. Just my 2 cents.

This is a complicated question... In general, yes, I release stuff for people to use (if they can figure out how :p ). In practice, too much exposure might result in a takedown request, in theory? Amazon and google do not seem to do that usually, using repos like mine as a free security audit, if anything, but who knows? But also, not like takedown request would affect me much (and it is unlikely, as I mentioned).

I have seen that post/thread... I admit, it amuses me somewhat. The... how to formulate it? Oblique way people refer to the repo appeals to me since it gamifies the usage a bit. On the other hand the constant queries for direct link make me want to post said direct link and be done. Though I know that if they can't find a link, giving it to them would not be the end of it, since the usage is tricky.

As mentioned above, I am not opposed, but I have no idea how much exposure is too much. Maybe they should point to your blog, it seems easier for many people.

Or BookFab... Their older app version was at least bespoke, though the latest one incorporated my code without cleaning it for some reason... Epubor was always an aggregator/wrapper for open source methods, AFAIK.

In conclusion, and as an aside, there is always a struggle in my mind between my desire to release tools (I am not fond of the secret tools) and the knowledge that it can lead to a variety of problems, both in the tool becoming obsolete and potential takedown requests. So I tend to just post stuff without advertising it and leave it to people to react, one way or another.

Fair enough, I'll nudge those users that request help, after checking out their post history in the hope that they look like real users and not an Amazon crony (Even if that is a lost cause but why not), I will point them to the Blog (Tutorial) and from there with the info on how to use your tool they should "hopefully" handle it from there.

If they bother to read, we will see them here when questions arise. But with a written tutorial and an Unlisted YT video that should covert it. (in an Ideal world!!)

So nudging to the Blog it is.
