How to get input values without framework ?

The following states that specifying input within serverless.yml sets it to $event.

However, when executing the following in plain PHP, $event remains undefined.

var_dump($event ?? null);// null returned

return function ($event) {
    echo ‘My cron function is running!’;// not called
    var_dump($event);
};

How can I retrieve the contents of $event without using a framework?
