MD breaks on syntax error

When you attempt to perform fixes during the mess detector phase, if you introduce a syntax error; MD will exit but not make QA try and repeat the tool. Instead it goes straight to the commit changes phase which could fool you in to committing broken code.

this must mean it fails with exit code of 0

if that is the case, our only possibility is to actively grep the output to make sure that it is spitting out what we want
