What should I do first after registering a GitHub account?

I just finished registering a GitHub account and feel completely lost facing the unfamiliar interface. I don’t know whether to create a repository, complete my profile, or learn other basic operations first. I hope to get a clear beginner’s guide, clarify the core steps after registration for new users, avoid detours, and quickly familiarize myself with GitHub’s basic usage logic.

A great first step is to work on your profile, because it helps you get familiar with GitHub without any pressure.

GitHub mainly revolves around repositories (often called "repos"). In most cases, you’ll create one repository per project, whether that project is code, documentation, or experiments.

A nice thing for beginners is that your profile README is actually a repository itself. By creating and editing it, you will:

1. Get hands-on practice with the GitHub interface
2. Learn how committing changes works
3. Understand basic concepts like files, edits, and commit messages

Once you’re comfortable with that, creating your first real project repository will feel much more natural.
