I don't understand why the change and paste events are needed.

The change event is fired when the textarea loses focus. The paste event is fired before the contents of the clipboard are pasted into the document.

On browser ie wrong to calculate the height

I m trying the code on both FireFox and IE. Works on Firefox but on IE the height of the textarea is wrong. I still try if I find something in the code and tell you if I find the reason for this behavior. ...

"padding" css-style for textarea is handled incorrectly

Try to perform $( #textarea ).css({padding: 20px }).autoResize(); and you ll be surprised... (Autogrow doesn t consider the padding are in the autogrow calculation)
