No audio in videos on Mac desktop app

I'm on a 2020 macbook M1.
If a video is embedded directly in a zulip message (uploaded), it plays without sound in the Zulip desktop app.

The same video plays WITH sound when viewed in a browser on the same computer.
It also plays fine with sound when viewed in the zulip iOS app.

Same behavior with embedding a youtube video by pasting in a link: no audio in the zulip desktop app, works fine in browser, works fine on mobile app.
