Clinical Trial Design Skill - Implementation-Agnostic Update

Date: 2026-02-09 Status: ✅ COMPLETE

Changes Made

1. Created python_implementation.py

  • ✅ Copied from trial_pipeline.py
  • ✅ Contains TrialFeasibilityAnalyzer class
  • ✅ Same functionality, different filename for consistency

2. Updated QUICK_START.md

  • ✅ Added "Choose Your Implementation" section
  • ✅ Split into Python SDK and MCP sections
  • ✅ Added conversational usage example for MCP
  • ✅ Added direct tool call examples for MCP (8 key tools)
  • ✅ Updated tool parameters section to note "applies to both"
  • ✅ Kept backward compatibility note

3. Backward Compatibility

  • ✅ trial_pipeline.py kept unchanged
  • ✅ Both imports work: from python_implementation import OR from trial_pipeline import

MCP Examples Added

Conversational Usage

"Analyze clinical trial feasibility for osimertinib in EGFR-mutant NSCLC using ToolUniverse"

Direct Tool Calls (8 steps)

  1. OpenTargets_get_disease_id_description_by_name - Disease identification
  2. drugbank_get_drug_basic_info_by_drug_name_or_id - Drug profile
  3. drugbank_get_pharmacology_by_drug_name_or_drugbank_id - Mechanism
  4. search_clinical_trials - Precedent trials
  5. drugbank_get_safety_by_drug_name_or_drugbank_id - Safety profile
  6. FDA_get_warnings_and_cautions_by_drug_name - FDA warnings
  7. PubMed_search_articles - Literature evidence
  8. PubMed_search_articles - Prevalence data

Key Features

Correct Parameters Highlighted

  • ✅ All DrugBank tools use query parameter
  • ✅ OpenTargets uses disease_name
  • ✅ ClinicalTrials uses condition and intervention
  • ✅ FDA uses drug_name
  • ✅ PubMed uses query

Implementation Agnostic

  • ✅ Same parameter names for Python SDK and MCP
  • ✅ Clear separation of implementation approaches
  • ✅ Works with Claude Desktop, compatible MCP clients, and Python scripts

Verification

# Both files exist
ls skills/tooluniverse-clinical-trial-design/*.py
# -> python_implementation.py (14K)
# -> trial_pipeline.py (14K)

# QUICK_START.md updated
cat skills/tooluniverse-clinical-trial-design/QUICK_START.md
# -> Shows both Python SDK and MCP sections

Consistency with Other Skills

Now matches the format of:

  • ✅ DDI skill (tooluniverse-drug-drug-interaction)
  • ✅ Antibody Engineering skill
  • ✅ CRISPR Screen Analysis skill
  • ✅ Structural Variant Analysis skill

All skills now have:

  • python_implementation.py (new)
  • Original pipeline.py (backward compatibility)
  • QUICK_START.md with both Python SDK and MCP examples
