Problem:

On the Expensify Card reconciliation report, you can use Withdrawal ID in both the filters and columns.

However, in the Expenses reports we only allow you to filter but not set it as a column.

Since this is important information for an accountant to export, we should allow them to display it.

After empirically verifying the fix on branch kj/88384-add-withdrawal-id-column (commit ced97cdba909) and per @JS00001's guidance that click-to-sort on Withdrawal ID is required, the real fix touches five places: column allowlist, per-row cell renderer, Transaction type field, visibility gate in SearchUIUtils, and client-side sort wiring. The updated body below reflects that.

Proposal

Please re-state the problem that we are trying to solve in this issue.

In the Expenses search, "Withdrawal ID" is available as a filter but cannot be added as a column. The Expensify Card reconciliation report offers it as both, and accountants need column-level parity — display and sort — in Expenses exports to reconcile card withdrawals without switching views.

What is the root cause of that problem?

Five independent gaps keep Withdrawal ID off the Expenses column picker, unrendered in rows, silently dropped by a visibility gate, and un-sortable even when selected.

Defect 1 — not in the EXPENSE column allowlist. CONST.SEARCH.TYPE_CUSTOM_COLUMNS.EXPENSE in src/CONST/index.ts (~L7591–7623) omits WITHDRAWAL_ID, so SearchColumnsPage never offers the toggle for Expenses.

Defect 2 — no row cell renderer. SearchTableHeader.tsx L121–124 registers the header, but the switch in src/components/TransactionItemRow/index.tsx (~L282) has no case WITHDRAWAL_ID, so enabling the column yields a header with empty body cells.

Defect 3 — withdrawalID is not on Transaction. In src/types/onyx/Transaction.ts, per-transaction withdrawalID doesn't exist — it lives only on SearchWithdrawalIDGroup for the grouped "withdrawal-id" view. Ungrouped Expenses responses don't carry it, so nothing is client-derivable.

Defect 4 — visibility gate in SearchUIUtils.getColumnsToShow filters it out. src/libs/SearchUIUtils.ts (~L5200 and L5411) keeps a ColumnVisibility map and a nonDataColumns set; the final customResult.filter((col) => nonDataColumns.has(col) || columns[col]) drops any column absent from both. WITHDRAWAL_ID is in neither, so even after a successful Save the header never mounts. Additionally, getSearchColumnTranslationKey has no case for it — the picker label would fall through to common.expenses.

Defect 5 — no sort wiring. transactionColumnNamesToSortingProperty in src/libs/SearchUIUtils.ts (~L257–L277) and sortableColumnNames / getTransactionSortValue in src/libs/ReportUtils.ts (~L13407–L13467) both omit WITHDRAWAL_ID. nonSortableColumns doesn't contain it, so the header would be clickable, but getSortByOptions would produce no sorting property and MoneyRequestReportTransactionList sort would no-op. Since the issue is framed as parity with the reconciliation report — which supports sort — this needs to be in scope.

Empirical confirmation of Defect 4: post-save URL was sortBy:tag sortOrder:desc type:expense columns:receipt,date,status,merchant,from,category,tag,amount,withdrawalID — the column was serialised correctly, yet Defect 4 stripped it at render time.

5. src/libs/ReportUtils.ts → add WITHDRAWAL_ID to sortableColumnNames and add a case WITHDRAWAL_ID: return transaction.withdrawalID ?? ''; arm in getTransactionSortValue so client-side sort in MoneyRequestReportTransactionList produces a stable string comparison. nonSortableColumns already doesn't include WITHDRAWAL_ID, so the header stays clickable.

Scope boundaries.

• Files: src/CONST/index.ts, src/components/TransactionItemRow/index.tsx, src/types/onyx/Transaction.ts, src/libs/SearchUIUtils.ts, src/libs/ReportUtils.ts. Backend must also emit withdrawalID per transaction.
• All platforms via shared Search components.
• Not touched: SearchTableHeader.tsx (header exists and is already sortable by default), grouped withdrawal-id view, reconciliation-report path, filter pipeline, TYPE_DEFAULT_COLUMNS. No API contract change beyond the additive field; client is null-safe.
• Verified on kj/88384-add-withdrawal-id-column at ced97cdba909 — Columns sheet → tick Withdrawal ID → Save → column header + empty cells render + header click toggles sort order. Populates once backend ships.

What alternative solutions did you explore? (Optional)

• Derive withdrawalID client-side from cached SearchWithdrawalIDGroup. Rejected: ungrouped responses omit the grouped payload, so it's not derivable without an extra round-trip.
• Default the column on. Rejected: the reconciliation report keeps it opt-in; defaulting on would unexpectedly widen every user's table.
• Reuse GROUP_WITHDRAWAL_ID. Rejected: it's bound to TransactionWithdrawalIDGroupListItemType (grouped rows) and doesn't fit per-transaction Expenses rows.
• Leave sort out of scope. Initially proposed; rejected after @JS00001 feedback — column-level parity with the reconciliation report includes sort, and the wiring is client-side via sortableColumnNames (no backend dependency).

What is the root cause of that problem?

Four gaps block Withdrawal ID from working as a flat Expenses search column:

1. TYPE_CUSTOM_COLUMNS.EXPENSE in src/CONST/index.ts omits WITHDRAWAL_ID — so the column picker never shows it as a toggleable option for Expenses search.

2. getColumnsToShow() in src/libs/SearchUIUtils.ts has no entry for WITHDRAWAL_ID in the flat ColumnVisibility map or nonDataColumns set — so even if forced into the URL query, it gets stripped at render time.

3. getSearchColumnTranslationKey() and transactionColumnNamesToSortingProperty in SearchUIUtils.ts have no WITHDRAWAL_ID entries — breaking the picker label and sort dispatch.

4. The renderColumn switch in src/components/TransactionItemRow/index.tsx has no WITHDRAWAL_ID case — so selected rows render empty cells.

Adding a data-presence gate in updateColumns would be contradictory: it would hide the column when no transactions carry a withdrawalID yet, violating JS00001's confirmed requirement: "if the column is selected in columns, yes we should show it." nonDataColumns = always show when selected; updateColumns = show only when data exists. For Withdrawal ID, the former is correct.

Sort: transactionColumnNamesToSortingProperty in SearchUIUtils.ts is sufficient for Expenses search sort. ReportUtils.ts sort helpers serve the Money Request Report view, not the Search page — no changes needed there.

Backend dependency: JS00001 is handling the BE PR to emit withdrawalID per transaction on the flat Expenses search payload. Frontend is null-safe — until BE lands, the column header stays visible via nonDataColumns and cells render empty string gracefully.

• Deriving withdrawalID client-side from SearchWithdrawalIDGroup: Rejected — ungrouped Expenses responses don't carry the grouped payload, so derivation would require an extra round-trip.
• Adding sort via ReportUtils.ts sortableColumnNames: Not needed — that path serves Money Request Report view. Sort for Expenses search is fully covered by transactionColumnNamesToSortingProperty in SearchUIUtils.ts.
