Velero File System Backups using kopia

Hi there,

I've installed the latest velero helm chart and configured kopia as the uploaderType, switching away from restic as this is now deprecated.

It does not seem like File System Backups are working - I'm seeing the following error in the related BackupRepository: error to get repo options: error to get storage variables: invalid storage provider

Reading the documentation of your plugin, I'm not totally sure if this should work, or if the problem is that kopia doesn't support Swift?

I don't have much experiences with Kopia file system backups yet, but what I know based on the design Velero uses one of the BackupStorageLocations specified in the backup command, schedule, etc. to backup contents of the file system.

So first you should check which BSL have you used. That BSL should be properly configured (credentials, ...). Then based on the documentation Velero should create a BackupRepository CR with the first backup. Can you check whether this was created and how does the content look like?

The error you mentioned starts here in the code.

Then it goes into this code:

Which contains this check 🙁 🙁 which can't be passed:

What I think the workflow is is that Velero needs to know how to push backup data into the bucket/container and it needs to find proper information and map it to Kopia data model so that Kopia understands where and how to push the data. That's where they implemented Kopia backups for their own providers.

Velero team is maintaining only subset of public official plugins and probably they don't care much about other plugins... Or at least not now. I'd expect that if some standard of data model need to be used to make Kopia work, they would update plugin interface but that didn't happen.

I will try to open issue to find out if there is a plan to support Kopia backups for other providers.

But for Swift users this shouldn't be a big issue, because we can use S3 endpoint of the Swift with AWS S3 Velero plugin. So you wouldn't use this plugin for Kopia backups, only for cluster backups and volume snapshots.

It's quite puzzled how to use this whole ecosystem and I don't like it, but I don't have real impact on Velero project. We just conform to the plugin interface.

Let me know if you see a way to configure it all together. Hope I helped a bit.
