Dependency Morphio fails in python 3.14 and is Archived.

We are unable to install PyNN in Python 3.14 due to an error with Marphio wheel.

Checking https://github.com/BlueBrain/MorphIO/ shiows is was archived by the owner on Feb 26, 2025. It is now read-only.

As this dependency is unlikely to be updated to python 3.14 PyNN needs to find a way to remove it as a dependency.

We regrettably will have to annouce that SpyNNaker will not work with Python 3.14 because PyNN does not.

It should not be a hard dependency for PyNN, though, because only the multi-compartment features require it. I will look into ensuring it is optional.

I second that this would be great ! For a tutorial where morphologies are not needed, this is a blocking point at the moment for students to install pyNN.

more info: install works fine with python < 3.14, yet some students with for instance MacOS are not confortable about installing nest from scratch and use that from homebrew whcich nest with python@3.14 ;

Thanks to openbraininstitute/MorphIO#18 we are now able to install pyNN on 3.14

I would still encourage removing morphio as a pYNN install requirement

Thanks a lot, it works fine on my side with the MacOS / homebrew / venv combo. Had to get system packages :

 /usr/local/opt/python@3.14/bin/python3 -m venv --system-site-packages .venv
 source .venv/bin/activate
 pip install -U -r requirements.txt
