Since this game is open source, would be great to have a Linux support too, not only for desktop players but also for server hosts who could use SteamCMD in order to make dedicated headless servers worldwide.

If you're talking about the source engine, there might be a way

@Joshua-Ashton who's a MVP in porting, developed a tool called dxvk-native which can be build together with game files in order to translate the windows engine calls to calls to linux equivalent.

It uses the same component (dxvk) that Valve uses in Proton to run windows games on linux / steam deck, but without Wine dependency.

There are other windows source games that use dxvk-native as a alternative to run on linux like Left 4 Dead 2 and Portal 2, so I believe the same could be accomplished here.

We don't have access to the engine's source code, and Valve does not have the resources to update a branch of the game engine that only we use. I've asked if there is a path to moving the game to a different engine branch and the answer they gave is "not currently".

That being said, the game has a platinum rating on ProtonDB, and if there's anything that isn't working well in Proton we can definitely make changes from our end to try to make it run better.

I'm aware that the game run well on proton (not for me who had input problems with wayland, but that's off topic), my main concern with this issue is the possibility of hosting game servers using CLI linux, because I believe it would be a better alternative for those interested in maintaining dedicated servers, since linux servers are cheaper (and more performant) to maintain.

Sigh. What if a modern engine were allowed. Valve should be more open on source, or at least release source 2 for community. Hope there will be a source code leak of the souce engine. :p

As interesting as it would be to pick through Source 2's code, we can't distribute things that use leaked code.
