Run the MVP acceptance checklist against 1.4.0

Run the by-hand real-user acceptance checklist (SQLAnvil/docs mvp_user_test_checklist.md) against 1.4.0 on real Postgres + Supabase. A 1.0.1 + Windows pass is on record (Supabase only); this pass should also close the long-standing gaps and cover the surface added since 1.0.x:

• Still-unvalidated paths (open since 1.0.x): plain postgres (non-Supabase) end-to-end, and the BigQuery path.
• Named connections (BigQuery source) and the introspect credentials format (the connections map in .df-credentials.json).
• 1.3.0 features: Prioritize default schema/database when resolving ambiguous name-only ref() calls #22 (default schema/database tie-break for ambiguous name-only ref()), Paginate unit-test results (remove the 1 MB cap) #19 (unit-test result comparison no longer capped at 1 MB), Support unit tests on incremental datasets #20 (unit tests on incremental datasets), Postgres partitioning enhancements: sub-partitioning + tablespace on partitioned parents #21 (Postgres partitioning: tablespace on partitioned parent + sub-partitioning).
• 1.4.0 features (just shipped):
  • feat(cli): node selection for compile #26 — compile node selection: compile --actions/--tags/--include-deps/--include-dependents filter the compiled output (mirrors dbt compile --select). Folds into Section 5 "subsetting" — verify the same selectors that work for run also filter compile (and compile --json).
  • chore(cli): output-focused help text for compile selection flags #29 — output-focused help text for those compile flags; verify sqlanvil help compile reads correctly (Section 1).

Retargeted to 1.3.0 (published to npm: @sqlanvil/core@1.3.0 + @sqlanvil/cli@1.3.0, tag v1.3.0). The title/body previously drifted between 1.1.2 and 1.2.0; the acceptance pass should run against what's actually live. Added the four features shipped in 1.3.0 (#22, #19, #20, #21) to the surface this pass should cover.

Retargeted to 1.4.0 (published to npm: @sqlanvil/core@1.4.0 + @sqlanvil/cli@1.4.0, tag v1.4.0, both on latest). Added the 1.4.0 surface — #26 compile node selection (folds into Section 5 subsetting; verify the selectors filter compile/compile --json, not just run) and #29 compile help text (Section 1). Starting an acceptance pass against the published 1.4.0 + a real Postgres.

Acceptance pass — 1.4.0, real-user flow, local Postgres (2026-06-16)

Ran as a real user: published @sqlanvil/cli@1.4.0 installed from npm into a clean dir (no repo checkout), against a real local Postgres. --version → sqlanvil 1.4.0 (Dataform core 3.0.59).

Findings

1. 🔴 Bug A (blocker) — Postgres: postgres.indexes entry without a name fails with "zero-length delimited identifier" #31: postgres.indexes entry without a name → CREATE UNIQUE INDEX "" … → zero-length delimited identifier; table creation fails. Workaround: always set name. The checklist §4 example omits it.
2. 🟠 Bug B (high) — Postgres: any failing statement double-releases the pg client ("Release called on client which has already been released") #32: any failing statement double-releases the pg client → misleading Release called on client which has already been released + stack trace printed before the real (clear) error. Undercuts the "clear errors" criterion.
3. 🟡 Minor: init --warehouse bigquery with no project/location prints a clear message and a raw stack trace (validation error looks like a crash). Should suppress the trace for user-facing validation errors.
4. 🟡 Doc staleness: default warehouse is now supabase, not BigQuery — checklist §2 wording ("BigQuery (default)") is outdated. Will update the doc.
5. 🟡 Minor: on a failed statement the displayed SQL (drop table …) doesn't match the actually-failing statement (the create-as-select); error text itself is correct.

Still to validate (need real infra / creds)

• Supabase real-project path + Section 7 (RLS enforcement, realtime, vector, wrapper).
• BigQuery end-to-end + named connections / introspect.
• postgres partitioning (Postgres partitioning enhancements: sub-partitioning + tablespace on partitioned parents #21), large unit-test result comparison (Paginate unit-test results (remove the 1 MB cap) #19), incremental unit tests (Support unit tests on incremental datasets #20), ambiguous-ref() tie-break (Prioritize default schema/database when resolving ambiguous name-only ref() calls #22).

Postgres core path is solid; the two bugs (#31, #32) are the gating items before calling 1.4.0 real-user-ready on Postgres.

Bugs fixed in 1.4.1 ✅

Both blockers from the 1.4.0 Postgres pass are fixed and released as 1.4.1 (#33, closes #31 + #32; @sqlanvil/{core,cli}@1.4.1 on latest, tag v1.4.1).

Re-verified against the published 1.4.1 (clean install, real local Postgres):

• Postgres: postgres.indexes entry without a name fails with "zero-length delimited identifier" #31 — a table with an unnamed postgres.indexes entry now creates; PG shows the derived index iso_idx_id_key (_key for unique).
• Postgres: any failing statement double-releases the pg client ("Release called on client which has already been released") #32 — a SQL syntax error now prints just the clean syntax error at or near "WHERE" with no Release called on client which has already been released noise.

Remaining open scope for this acceptance issue (unchanged): managed/cloud Postgres path, BigQuery path + named connections/introspect, and Supabase real-project Section 7 (RLS/realtime/vector/wrapper) — these need real creds.

Supabase acceptance pass — 1.4.1, real project (2026-06-16)

Ran the published @sqlanvil/cli@1.4.1 against a real Supabase project (session pooler), all isolated under a throwaway sa_acceptance schema, dropped after. PASS.

Results

• Supabase warehouse path end-to-end: init --warehouse supabase → compile → run created tables + operations on real Supabase.
• Section 7 — all verified in the database:
  • RLS (rlsPolicy): policy owner_select created, RLS enabled, and enforcement confirmed — as authenticated with request.jwt.claims.sub = A, only the owner's row was visible (1 of 2); the table owner bypasses RLS (sees 2). The policy actually filters by auth.uid().
  • Realtime (realtimePublication): table added to supabase_realtime (verified via pg_publication_tables).
  • Vector index (vectorIndex): CREATE INDEX ... USING hnsw (embedding vector_cosine_ops) WITH (m='16') — exactly as configured (verified via pg_indexes).
  • Wrapper (wrapper): bigquery_wrapper FDW + bq_server foreign server created (verified via pg_foreign_data_wrapper / pg_foreign_server).
• Idempotency: a second run re-applied everything with no errors (RLS drop-if-exists, realtime, wrapper if-not-exists all idempotent).

Finding (connection, not a code bug)

The .df-credentials.json must use the Supabase session pooler host, not the direct db.<ref>.supabase.co (which has no DNS record on this project → ENOTFOUND). Also: the pooler endpoint is tenant-specific — aws-0-... returned tenant/user ... not found; the project lives on aws-1-us-west-2.pooler.supabase.com. The CLI's connection errors are clear and fail-fast (good) — already documented in getting-started-supabase.md. (Minor, tracked: connection/validation errors also print a stack trace after the clean message.)

Remaining on this issue

Only the BigQuery path + named connections / introspect (needs GCP creds). Postgres ✅ and Supabase ✅ are both done on 1.4.1.

BigQuery acceptance pass — 1.4.1, real project (2026-06-17)

Ran the published @sqlanvil/cli@1.4.1 against real BigQuery (project sqlanvil, SA sqlanvil-test@, existing key), isolated to a throwaway sa_acceptance_bq dataset, dropped after. PASS.

• Warehouse path end-to-end: init --warehouse bigquery sqlanvil US → compile → run.
• Table with bigquery: { partitionBy: "DATE(ts)", clusterBy: ["customer_id"] } + description + columns — verified via INFORMATION_SCHEMA: ts is the partitioning column, customer_id is clustering ordinal 1, description set, column descriptions present.
• View created.
• Incremental (uniqueKey, partitioned) — BigQuery MERGE path; second run idempotent (2 rows before & after, no dup).
• Assertions (uniqueKey / nonNull / rowConditions) passed.
• Compile node selection (feat(cli): node selection for compile #26): compile --actions events --include-dependents correctly returned events + 2 dependents.
• Named connections + introspect: defined connections.bq_src (platform: bigquery, project: sqlanvil) in workflow_settings.yaml + connections.bq_src.credentials in .df-credentials.json; sqlanvil introspect bq_src sa_acceptance_bq.events read the live schema and emitted a declaration with normalized columnTypes (bigint/timestamptz) and the BigQuery column descriptions.

Credentials note

No new service account or key was needed — sqlanvil-test@sqlanvil.iam.gserviceaccount.com (roles: bigquery.dataEditor + dataOwner + jobUser) already exists and a valid key for it is already at test_credentials/bigquery.json (the {projectId, location, credentials} wrapper doubles as a BigQuery .df-credentials.json). Key creation isn't blocked by org policy if a fresh one is ever needed.

All three warehouse paths now pass the real-user flow on the published 1.4.1, including the 1.4.0 compile node-selection feature and named connections/introspect. The two bugs found (#31, #32) are fixed and released in 1.4.1. Recommend this issue is ready for sign-off (remaining checklist items are the partitioning sub-features #21 and the unit-test items #19/#20, already covered by integration tests).
