Integration request: Multisite Ultimate ↔ FluentAffiliate (recurring payments + manual assignment)

Current situation

• The first payment via Fluent Forms + Stripe is tracked correctly by FluentAffiliate.
• But recurring Stripe subscription payments are not tracked automatically.
• If I manually assign a customer to an affiliate (outside the form flow), there’s currently no way to link that affiliate to the customer’s future recurring payments/membership.

What’s needed

• Each renewal inside WP Ultimo/Multisite Ultimate should automatically generate a commission in FluentAffiliate (if the customer was referred).
• Ability to manually link a membership to an affiliate after the initial payment (e.g. if the customer used Stripe Checkout instead of Fluent Forms).

Notes

• If you need staging access to test, I can provide it.
• I think this could become the most modern, fast, and easy setup for subscription + affiliate tracking if feasible. In addition to being compatible with : https://multisiteultimate.com/product/fluent-forms-integration/

The two key pieces needed would be: (1) a webhook/hook in the Fluent Forms + Stripe flow to record the affiliate referral at subscription creation time, and (2) a recurring payment hook (e.g. wc_subscription_renewal_payment_complete or Stripe webhook for invoice.payment_succeeded) to fire commissions on renewals. Manual affiliate assignment for memberships would need a UI in the WP Ultimo/Multisite Ultimate member admin. Tagging @superdav42 to assess feasibility and whether this belongs in the FluentForms Integration addon or a new FluentAffiliate addon.

The core issue is that FluentAffiliate tracks the initial Stripe payment via the form submission, but recurring subscription renewals happen outside the form flow (Stripe webhook → WP Ultimo/Multisite Ultimate), so FluentAffiliate never sees them.

What would be needed:

1. Recurring commission tracking: Hook into Multisite Ultimate's subscription renewal events and fire a FluentAffiliate commission if the customer was originally referred. This requires storing the affiliate reference at signup and replaying it on each renewal.
2. Manual affiliate assignment: A UI to link an existing membership to an affiliate retroactively (for customers who paid via Stripe Checkout or other non-form flows).

This is a reasonable addon scope — either as an extension to the existing Fluent Forms Integration addon or as a standalone FluentAffiliate addon. I'll add this to the backlog for evaluation.

If you're willing to test a beta, staging access would be helpful when we get to implementation. I'll tag this issue to track it.

Root Cause: FluentAffiliate tracks conversions at the form submission layer. Multisite Ultimate's subscription renewals happen at the gateway webhook layer (invoice.payment_succeeded / charge.succeeded in class-base-stripe-gateway.php:2850), which is invisible to FluentAffiliate. The affiliate referral data is never stored on the membership, so there's nothing to replay on renewal.

Architecture Notes

• The existing AffiliateWP addon (multisite-ultimate-affiliatewp) is the closest architectural precedent. It already handles first-payment tracking and recurring referrals via AffiliateWP's own recurring referrals add-on (documented in .wiki/using-wp-ultimo-affiliatewp-integration-to-create-your-own-referral-program-for-wp-ultimo.md).
• A FluentAffiliate addon would follow the same pattern but needs to store the affiliate reference on the membership model (since FluentAffiliate doesn't have its own subscription-aware tracking).
• The renewal payment creation happens at inc/gateways/class-base-stripe-gateway.php:3010 with transaction_type = 'renewal' — this is the correct hook point for firing commissions.
• Key dependency: FluentAffiliate must expose a PHP API for creating commissions programmatically. Without this, the integration is impossible regardless of our architecture.

Scope Assessment

• Scope creep risk: Low — well-defined two-feature request
• Complexity: Medium (default sonnet tier)
• Estimated effort: 8-16h (including FluentAffiliate API research)

Recommendation

Decision: APPROVE — with the following conditions:

1. Pre-implementation: Verify FluentAffiliate has a public PHP API for programmatic commission creation. If not, this is blocked upstream — open a feature request with WPManageNinja first.
2. Implementation as a new addon (multisite-ultimate-fluentaffiliate or ultimate-multisite-fluentaffiliate) — not an extension of the Fluent Forms Integration addon, since FluentAffiliate is a separate product.
3. Architecture: Mirror the existing AffiliateWP addon pattern. Store affiliate ID as membership meta at signup, replay on renewal payments.
4. Gateway-agnostic: Hook at the payment model layer (after wu_create_payment), not at the Stripe gateway layer, so it works with PayPal and other gateways too.

6. Test with both Stripe and PayPal gateways
