Is it possible to use memcached with Herd?

I want to figure out which memcached people often use: https://pecl.php.net/package/memcache or https://pecl.php.net/package/memcached

This is the workaround I ended up with.
I am using macOS and PHP v8.1, feel free to adjust this to your own setup.

1. Install php locally

brew install php@8.1

2. Install dependencies

brew install libmemcached zlib

3. Obtain full paths to the installed components

brew --cellar
# /opt/homebrew/Cellar

realpath /opt/homebrew/Cellar/libmemcached/*/
# /opt/homebrew/Cellar/libmemcached/1.0.18_2/

realpath /opt/homebrew/Cellar/zlib/*/
# /opt/homebrew/Cellar/zlib/1.3.1

4. Install memcached via pecl (use libmemcached and zlib paths from previous step)

pecl install memcached
#libmemcached directory [no] : /opt/homebrew/Cellar/libmemcached/1.0.18_2/
#zlib directory [no] : /opt/homebrew/Cellar/zlib/1.2.12
#use system fastlz [no] :  <press enter>
#enable igbinary serializer [no] : <press enter>
#enable msgpack serializer [no] : <press enter>
#enable json serializer [no] : <press enter>
#enable server protocol [no] : <press enter>
#enable sasl [yes] : <press enter>
#enable sessions [yes] : <press enter>

5. Obtain full path to the installed extension:

find /opt/homebrew/lib/php/pecl -type f -name "memcached.so" -print
# /opt/homebrew/lib/php/pecl/20210902/memcached.so

6. Activate the compiled extension. Open the file: ~/Library/Application\ Support/Herd/config/php/81/php.ini. And add the following line (use the path value from previous step):

extension=/opt/homebrew/lib/php/pecl/20210902/memcached.so

7. Restart Herd

herd stop
herd start
