💡 What: Replaced O(N) list membership checks (if x not in seen: seen.append(x)) with O(1) dictionary deduplication (list(dict.fromkeys(...))) in compile.py and promote.py.
🎯 Why: As the number of footnotes grows, iterating over the list for every match becomes O(N^2). This causes an unnecessary performance bottleneck during compilation and promotion.
📊 Impact: Reduces O(N^2) complexity to O(N), achieving a >20x speedup for pages with many footnotes.
🔬 Measurement: Verified with a synthetic benchmark of 5000 markers (1000 unique) running 20x faster. Confirmed correctness by running the full test suite.
