AI Commits integration into Fork

Thank you for creating Fork. I was wondering if there was a way to integrate https://github.com/Nutlope/aicommits into Fork? With 5.1K stars it would make it quicker and simpler to write commit messages using OpenAI.

I am trying to get it to work as we speak. AI Commits has its own prepare-commit-msg hook integration (https://github.com/Nutlope/aicommits#git-hook), but it works by opening a configured git editor if no commit message was provided, so that the author can edit the AI output prior to committing it. I am trying to see if it would work on an existing project I have just installed this hook on.

Ask the author to make it work in non-virtual mode and to output to a file or stdout similar to https://git-scm.com/docs/git-format-patch.

For example aicommand --output-file=.git/COMMITMESSAGE and aicommand --stdout.

I would also be interested in seeing some form of OpenAI integration, ideally built into the Fork commit message text editor with some form of tab completion.

I recently started using GitHub Copilot with IntelliJ, and it's surprisingly good at coming up with documentation comments in my code. So I wouldn't be surprised if it can do a reasonable job at summarizing a commit.

@DanPristupov I think it makes a lot of sense to leverage prepare-commit hooks instead of having built-in support, as it would come with a significant maintenance burden. However I've tried both of the mentioned libraries and neither seem to work with Fork. I tried gptcommit that you mentioned but it gives error: a value is required for '--commit-msg-file <COMMIT_MSG_FILE>' but none was supplied, possibly because it opens up an editor after commiting, just like aicommits.
Or maybe I'm doing something wrong?

It would be great if there was a way to make this work as it's a pretty useful feature that's quickly becoming standard among Git clients. I understand that we can technically write our own prepare-commit hook, but that's pretty involved for a lot of us.

It's possible with custom commands, I use aider so my command is sh script like this
"aider --commit --no-check-update --no-gitignore --no-dirty-commits --exit --model sonnet" with API key

In Fork 2.55.0 we added the ability to generate commit messages using OpenAI. Later we are going to other services.
