In IPython, both shellapp and interactivelshell use IPython.terminal.pt_inputhooks. I bet rlipython doesn't work out of the box with those, though I haven't verified.

I suspect we want to pull over the code from https://github.com/ipython/ipython/blob/master/IPython/lib/inputhook.py as readline respects the PyOS_InputHook function. All of those are marked as deprecated in IPython so they may be deleted at some point...
