A tiny mind-map / flowchart editor that round-trips between a browser GUI and a
plain-text .flowgo file. Every change in the GUI rewrites the file, and the
file is the source of truth — you can hand-edit it, version-control it, or
generate it from another tool.
License: AGPL-3.0. The core editor and MCP server are AGPL — use, modify, and self-host freely. Network use of a modified version obligates you to share the source under the same license.
The hosted collaboration / sharing service at flowgo-map.com is a separate proprietary product running on top of this core. It is not part of the AGPL release.
The path of least resistance, in order:
1. In your browser, no install: flowgo-map.com
2. On macOS / Linux via Homebrew:

The tap lives at lassediercks/homebrew-flowgo
and tracks the latest release. brew upgrade flowgo pulls new versions.
3. On your machine, one command:

flowgo new
flowgo new mints a <random_name>.flowgo file in the current directory and
opens it in your browser. The in-app help (? button, top-right) covers every
keybind and gesture.
To open an existing file:
flowgo mindmap.flowgo
The binary starts an HTTP server on 127.0.0.1:54041 (or a fallback port),
prints the URL, and opens your browser. If the file doesn't exist it's created
with one seed box.
Everything below is for working on flowgo itself.
just dev
Runs vite build --watch for the frontend and re-runs go run whenever any
*.go file or dist/index.html changes. Requires pnpm and go. Ctrl+C
tears both processes down cleanly.

idis a plain word, unique within its map. It may not contain whitespace, a line break, a control character,",\, or:— the format is line- and space-delimited, and:separates an edge handle, so an id carrying any of them could not be read back as itself. Writes carrying one are rejected rather than silently rewritten, since the edges and submaps that reference the id would be orphaned by a rename.labelis a bare word or"quoted string"(escapes:\",\\,\n). A carriage return has no escape of its own: it is written as\n, the same folding the editor applies to pasted text.<handle>is one oft,r,b,l,tl,tr,bl,br— a side or corner of the box. Omit to let the renderer auto-pick the nearest handle.- The edge
[label]is the relationship text drawn at the edge midpoint (double-click an edge in the editor to set it). It is the fifth token, behind the palette, because slot 4 has always been the palette and is read as an integer — so a labelled edge with no palette of its own writes the default sentinel1to hold the slot:edge b1 b2 1 "depends on". An unlabelled edge writes neither token, so files predating edge labels keep their exact bytes. flowgo ≤ 0.3.12 does not error on the five-token form — itsedgeparser reads at most four tokens and ignores the rest — but it drops the labels the next time it writes the file. Opening a labelled map in an old binary is safe; saving from one is lossy. map <path>switches the current map. Paths look like/,/b1,/b1/c2. Each path corresponds to "the inside of" the box at that path.anchor <id>marks one box per map as the recenter target. At most one per map; the parser/serializer enforce the invariant.

Files without any map directive parse as a single root map — fully
backwards-compatible with the flat form.
pnpm build:inline builds dist-inline/flowgo-inline.js: a single
dependency-free script that renders .flowgo text read-only, with
pan/zoom and submap drill-in. No editor, no network calls, no bundler
required by the consumer — drop it on any page:

flowgo <file> also serves a Model Context Protocol
endpoint at /mcp on the same port as the GUI. Point any MCP client (Claude
Desktop, Cursor, etc.) at:
http://127.0.0.1:<port>/mcp
The port is printed at startup next to MCP:. Both the GUI and MCP share the
same file mutex, so AI edits and GUI edits coexist safely.
Watch the agent draw. With the map open in a browser, agent edits appear
live — no refresh. The page subscribes to GET /events (server-sent events);
the server bumps a revision counter on every write that actually changes the
file and the page re-reads /state. Edits you make in a text editor alongside
show up too (the file is polled once a second). Three things it deliberately
does not do:
- It never applies over unsaved work. If you're mid-drag or mid-label-edit when a change arrives, it's held back and a banner says so; it lands by itself as soon as your edit is saved. Nothing is merged and nothing is clobbered — writes are still last-writer-wins, exactly as before.
- It doesn't echo your own saves. Your page never rebuilds because of something you did.
- It doesn't move your camera. Pan, zoom and the submap you're in survive every update; undo history is reset, because replaying it would silently revert the other writer's work.
/events is read-only and carries only a counter, never map content. Under
--host it's on the same unauthenticated LAN surface as /state.

All tools take an optional path (defaults to /) so AI can target submaps.
The transport is JSON-RPC 2.0 over POST (streamable-HTTP, simple form — no
sessions or SSE).
Hosted, zero-install: flowgo-map.com also runs
a remote MCP at https://flowgo-map.com/api/mcp with a create_map(flowgo_text)
tool — one call, no local binary, returns a public share URL. See

Hosted sessions are anonymous by default: maps you create are reachable by
link but belong to nobody. The hosted server additionally offers an
authenticate tool implementing a gh auth login-style device pairing:
- the agent calls
authenticateand gets back ahttps://flowgo-map.com/authenticate?code=…URL; - the human opens it in a browser where they're signed in to flowgo and approves — the code is single-use and expires in 10 minutes;
- the agent calls
authenticateagain to confirm. From then onshareandcreate_mapin that session save maps into the account.
The session identity is the streamable-HTTP Mcp-Session-Id header the
server assigns at initialize; clients that don't round-trip it can pass a
workspace_id from start_workspace instead. DELETE on the MCP endpoint
unlinks the session again.
This is a pairing flow, not an OAuth 2.1 authorization server — listing
flowgo as an official Claude/OpenAI connector additionally needs RFC 8414 /
RFC 9728 metadata, RFC 7591 dynamic client registration, and a PKCE
authorization-code flow. That layer would sit in front of the same
account-linking seam (flowgo.MCPAuth), not replace it.
The library exposes this as flowgo.Config.Auth (a flowgo.MCPAuth
implementation supplied by the host). It is nil for the CLI and for
flowgo serve, which is why authenticate doesn't appear there.
Releases are managed by release-please.
Push commits to main using
Conventional Commits (feat:, fix:,
feat!: for breaking changes, etc.) and the workflow will open a "release-PR".
Merging that PR tags a new version, creates a GitHub release, and attaches
prebuilt binaries for linux/{amd64,arm64}, darwin/{amd64,arm64}, and
windows/amd64.
Versioning policy (configured in release-please-config.json):
- Tags are plain semver (
0.0.1,0.0.2, …) — novprefix. - We're in the pre-1.0 phase:
bump-patch-for-minor-pre-majormakes regularfeat:commits bump the patch (so we stay in0.0.*); breaking changes (feat!:/BREAKING CHANGE:) bump the minor (0.0.* → 0.1.0).
The version baked into the release binaries is set via
-ldflags "-X main.version=<tag>" and is shown by flowgo version.
