Long filenames are abreviated by replacing that last characters before the extension with ellipsis (…) This might hide important information (version, date what have you). Bad UX design.

I think this is what for example macos does, so I guess it is generally a good idea :)

Depending if this is done in browser or not probably is key here. If indeed the ui relies on browser truncation it is hard to do. SSR would be achieved with:

But there should be a way to find the actual render length.

You can get really clever with ellipsization. You can take punctuation into account, do it in different parts of the word based on content type (like what this issue is suggesting), do it based on whitespace, show the full length of the string on hover, or dynamically shorten some strings or reduce tracking to avoid it altogether.

I'd say it would be nice to do all of these where we can, but I wouldn't go as far as implementing custom behavior for it. Maybe something to track the web feature development on, though. (In the mean time, maybe we can also work on showing full filename in the hover tooltip?)
