Remote updater running twice

We have this happening a LOT now, and I have gotten into states where changes don't trigger the save button and where the zillion POST messages go by.

One thing that seems reproducible is
Open oerpub8/new-book-92
Add a new line
Wait a bit and get "Uncaught Error: BUG! remoteUpdater seems to be running twice. did you change repos?"

Today is a good day to test this, as I am getting lots of write errors from github.

I think the problem is that if a write fails, bookeditor deals with this by assuming it is "probably" because of a remote change, and sets about updating and merging. Now if this happens in the middle of an existing update, bang: You get the error message.
