Design forward: Sharing dialog

Some thoughts on how to improve sharing which @MTRichards and I discussed. @MTGap what do you think? We should collaborate on that soon to make sharing more awesome.

Share dialog in general

• input field should have suggestions directly, maybe use Chosen.js
• more padding, bigger in general, better grouping (I’ll do that ;)
• show name, »can edit« and »can share« and x directly (edit & share default on)
• line up detail CRUD dropdown as list with »can edit«, default all selected
• in the future user images on the left of each row

Share via email

• currently goes through share with link, too cumbersome
• should be integrated in the one field on top: »Share with user or email«
• show email in list like username matt@example.com, only action is x
• future: generate unique link per email address so revocation on a per-person basis is possible

• rename from »share public link«
• input box next to label
• »password protect« slightly indented maybe, or group it somehow

Expiration date

• ability to set date and time (only granular to hours)
• make impossible to choose date in past, minimum 1 hour in future
• show countdown as feedback (only granular to hours)
• admin ability to set default expiration time (default: expiration completely disabled)

The only one I have issue with is:

This used to be how it was, but it was a huge performance hit for large user bases. Even with retrieving a few users at a time would have performance issues because of trying to sort them in the list.

You should know at least part of the name of the person you want to share with.

I'd prefer to have a proper modal dialog instead of a dropdown menu

Allow implicitly sharing all files in (a) shared folder, ideally even avoid confusion where user finds 'his' files in home while others see it in shared/.

Regarding Chosen.js: logic suggests you first get to choose a group, not individual user(s).
Current implementation/dialog is close to useless, it even expects users to know name of the group they're in themselves, which is not shown anywhere. This IF user understands he's supposed/allowed to enter group name there at all.

In 5.0.6 the entire file rights dialog/structure seems to be missing, so hoping this will get fixed soon.

I'm curious to why the file rights dialog was removed, it's one of the main reasons I use ownCloud.

@karlitschek I was referring to the share dialog from OC 4.5.
I previously used OC 4.5, and there was an option to give groups a "can edit" permission under the share dialog.

I haven't found a similar option in OC 5, and I searched quite a bit too, I'm therefore under assumption that this dialog item was removed in OC 5.

I'm stuck with the message "You don't have write permissions here.", is there anything that could be done with this?

@karlitschek @tuxick Scratch that, I just realized it's still there, you just have to hover over the group/user after you've added them to the share list.

Yes, sorry for the confusion. This will be more clearly with the redesign, not necessitating any hovering.

But please, open separate issues for such feedback. This thread is for design planning.

I have a question and a suggestion regarding the sharing design.

Why is it not possible to rename a file/folder that s.o. shared directly with me, but a file/folder that is located in a shared folder?
This possibility would be useful when several users shared folders with generic names like "Pictures" with you.
As renaming is not possible right now, you have to click on the sharing dialog of each folder to look for a shared folder of a certain User .
What do you think about putting this info to the file list? I think most users have enough space on their screens and one would save many clicks.
