@jhheider i took a look. at least on my local env, what appears to be happening is the test is trying to compile a native module for ruby. it invokes gcc but on my system it's not installed.

the problem is slightly different if you install gcc on the host, since ruby was compiled with clang, it tries to use clang-style CFLAGS which don't work on gcc. is there a way to specify the tests have a runtime dependency on clang in package.yml? maybe your clang package already aliases gcc to clang, so just having it in the dependencies would fix it?

Dependencies can be top level, build, or test. So, yes, there's fine control. That analysis seems good. Definitely worth playing with.

Can also always set up a bin dir and symlink things in build or test steps.

but, the underlying issue is that the ruby package was built with clang but the command used was gcc , and the gcc command got hardcoded in the ruby package. so, i think the fix should actually be in the ruby package. let me take a look
