πŸ“ Centralized Logging

BinDB features a comprehensive centralized logging system for production monitoring and debugging:

Features

  • Structured JSON Logging: Cloud-native structured logs for easy parsing and analysis
  • Request Correlation: Automatic correlation IDs for tracking requests across the system
  • Performance Tracking: Built-in timing and performance metrics
  • Environment-Aware: Different log levels for development vs production
  • Context Propagation: Request context automatically propagated through async operations
  • Error Tracking: Comprehensive error logging with stack traces and metadata

Log Levels

  • DEBUG: Detailed information for debugging (development only)
  • INFO: General informational messages about system operation
  • WARN: Warning messages for potentially problematic situations
  • ERROR: Error messages for failures and exceptions

Configuration

Set the log level using the LOG_LEVEL environment variable:

# Development - verbose logging
LOG_LEVEL=DEBUG npm start

# Production - essential logs only
LOG_LEVEL=INFO npm start

# Critical errors only
LOG_LEVEL=ERROR npm start

Log Format

In production, logs are output as structured JSON:

{
  "timestamp": "2025-11-08T17:05:41.599Z",
  "level": "INFO",
  "message": "Database created successfully: mydb",
  "context": {
    "correlationId": "f74265e42f76aaf8d74cd3e8ba5cc285",
    "requestId": "a83e6634ae160bde",
    "database": "mydb",
    "duration": 15
  }
}

In development, logs are pretty-printed for readability:

[2025-11-08T17:05:41.599Z] [INFO] [f74265e42f76aaf8d74cd3e8ba5cc285] Database created successfully: mydb {"database":"mydb","duration":15}

Request Tracking

Every HTTP request is assigned a unique correlation ID that tracks the request through the entire system:

  • X-Correlation-ID Header: Pass a correlation ID in the request header to track requests across services
  • Request ID: Each request also gets a unique request ID for internal tracking
  • Performance Metrics: Automatic timing of all operations with duration logging

Logged Operations

  • HTTP requests and responses with timing
  • Database operations (create, insert, update, delete)
  • Table loading and initialization
  • Bulk operations with batch statistics
  • Error conditions with full context
  • Server lifecycle events (startup, shutdown)
  • Uncaught exceptions and unhandled rejections

πŸ–₯️ Admin Interface

BinDB includes a comprehensive web-based admin interface for easy database management:
