Confusion regarding fmt.rs `{:.*}` syntax

I 'm afraid I didn't completely grok examples featuring $ from the IRC conversation, but I think they should be explained as well.

Current behavior: println!("a{:5}b", "n͈̰̎") outputs an͈̰̎ b
