Why Tumblr Video Downloader

Tumblr serves video through its own internal player and content delivery pipeline, so there is no native option to right-click and save a video post to your computer. Images and GIFs embedded in posts are often served in reduced quality or wrapped in markup that makes direct saving inconvenient. Reblogged media can disappear if the original poster deletes their account, leaving no easy way to preserve content you have interacted with.

Tumblr Video Downloader is being designed to operate inside the browser tab where you already consume Tumblr content. The goal is to detect video and media elements within posts on your dashboard or on individual blog pages, present clear download options, and produce standard MP4 or image files that you can keep locally. Rather than copying post URLs into an external site and hoping for the best, the extension will surface download controls right alongside the content you are viewing.

Planned Features

  • One-click video downloads from native Tumblr video posts as MP4 files
  • Image and GIF saving at the highest available resolution from post content
  • Dashboard-level detection that identifies downloadable media as you scroll
  • Blog page and permalink support for saving media from individual post views
  • Batch selection for downloading multiple images from photo set posts
  • Filename generation using post metadata such as blog name and post ID
  • Lightweight overlay controls that appear on or near each media element
  • Cross-browser compatibility targeting Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Firefox

How It Will Work

  1. Install the extension once it is released from your browser's extension store.
  2. Navigate to Tumblr and log in to your account or browse public blogs.
  3. Scroll through your dashboard or visit a blog page containing media posts.
  4. Look for download indicators that appear on video, image, or GIF posts.
  5. Click the download control on the media element you want to save.
  6. For photo set posts, select individual images or choose to grab the full set.
  7. Pick a quality or format option if multiple versions are available.
  8. The file saves directly to your local downloads folder as an MP4 or image.

Expected Formats

  • Input: Tumblr native video streams, embedded images, and animated GIFs served through Tumblr's CDN
  • Output: MP4 for video content, JPEG/PNG for static images, GIF or MP4 for animated content

Exported files will use standard formats that work with any media player, image viewer, or editing application on desktop and mobile devices.

Who It's For

  • Tumblr users who want to keep local copies of video posts they enjoy
  • Artists and creators who need to archive their own posted media before migrating platforms
  • Fandom community members saving video edits, fan art, and creative content shared on the platform
  • Researchers and journalists collecting visual media from public Tumblr blogs for reference
  • Anyone who has lost access to bookmarked Tumblr content after original posters removed their blogs

Use Cases We're Building For

  • Save a video edit or fan-made clip from your dashboard before it gets buried in the feed
  • Archive your own blog media as a local backup in case you decide to leave the platform
  • Download high-resolution art and photography from creators who post exclusively on Tumblr
  • Collect reference images and GIFs from tagged searches for mood boards or creative projects
  • Preserve video posts from blogs that may deactivate or become inaccessible over time

FAQ

When will Tumblr Video Downloader be released? A release date has not been set. Sign up at the waitlist link above to be notified as soon as it is available.

Does it work with reblogged content? Yes. The extension is being built to detect media in both original posts and reblogs as they appear on your dashboard or on any blog page you visit.

Will it handle Tumblr's native video player? That is the primary target. Tumblr hosts videos through its own player and CDN, and the extension will be designed to extract the source file from that delivery pipeline.

Can I download photo sets with multiple images? Batch downloading from photo set posts is a planned feature. You will be able to select individual images or save the entire set at once.

Is it free? Pricing details will be announced closer to launch. SERP extensions typically include a free trial period.

Will it work with private or password-protected blogs? The extension will operate on whatever content your browser can display. If you are logged in and have access to a private blog, the media on that page should be detectable.

About Tumblr

Tumblr is a microblogging and social networking platform where users create and share posts containing text, images, GIFs, videos, audio, and links. Known for its creative communities and fandom culture, the platform hosts a vast amount of original video content, artwork, and photography. Tumblr does not offer a built-in download feature for media in posts, and its video player provides no save-to-file option. Tumblr Video Downloader is being built to fill that gap for users who want to keep local copies of the visual content they discover and engage with on the platform.
