- About VK
VKontakte is the largest social network in Russia and the CIS region, and its integrated video platform hosts an enormous catalog of user-uploaded videos, music clips, movies, and short-form content. Unlike platforms that surface a direct file link, VK delivers video through adaptive streaming protocols inside its own player, making it difficult to simply right-click and save a video file. External downloader sites are unreliable, often filled with intrusive advertising, and frequently break when VK updates its player infrastructure.
VK Video Downloader is being designed to sit inside the browser and interact directly with the video player on VK pages. The goal is to detect video playback in the active tab, resolve the underlying media source, present available quality levels, and produce a clean MP4 file saved to your local machine. Because everything runs inside the browser extension environment, there is no need to copy and paste URLs into external services or install heavyweight desktop applications just to keep a local copy of a video.
- Automatic detection of VK video content on any VK page
- Resolution selection so you can pick from available quality tiers before saving
- MP4 output for broad compatibility with all major media players and devices
- Batch download support for saving multiple videos from a single page or playlist
- Filename generation using the video title and uploader metadata
- Progress indicator showing download status and estimated time remaining
- Browser-native workflow with no external software dependencies
- Cross-browser compatibility targeting Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Firefox
- Install the extension once it is released from the Chrome Web Store or equivalent marketplace.
- Navigate to VK and sign in to your account as you normally would.
- Browse to any page containing a video you want to save.
- Play the video or simply land on the video page so the player loads.
- Open the extension popup to see the detected video source and available resolutions.
- Select the quality level you prefer from the available options.
- Click the download button and choose where to save the MP4 file.
- The file is saved to your local machine, ready for offline playback.
- Input: VK adaptive video streams (HLS / MPEG-DASH segments served by VK's CDN)
- Output: MP4 (H.264 video with AAC audio)
Exported files will be saved as standard MP4, which is compatible with virtually every media player, smartphone, tablet, smart TV, and video editing application on the market. No format conversion or post-processing is required after download.
- VK users who want to watch videos offline during travel or in areas with poor connectivity
- Content creators who need local copies of their own uploads for backup or re-editing
- Researchers and journalists archiving public video content for reference
- Language learners saving Russian-language video material for study and review
- Anyone who prefers a local media library over streaming from a social network
- Save a lecture or tutorial video from a VK community page for later study
- Archive your own uploaded content before making account changes
- Download music clips or concert recordings shared by artists on VK
- Keep offline copies of short films or documentary content hosted on the platform
- Build a local collection of language learning videos for repeated review sessions
When will VK Video Downloader be released? A release date has not been set. Sign up at the waitlist link above to be notified as soon as it is available.
Will it work outside of VK? No. This extension is purpose-built for the VK (VKontakte) video platform and its player infrastructure. It will not work on other video sites.
What video quality will it support? Quality options will depend on what VK makes available for each video. Common resolutions on VK range from 240p up to 1080p, and the extension will let you choose from whatever tiers the platform exposes.
Will it preserve the original video title? The plan is to use the video title and uploader name from the VK page as the default filename, so your downloads stay organized without manual renaming.
Is it free? Pricing details will be announced closer to launch. SERP extensions typically include a free trial period.
Can I download private or restricted videos? The extension will only be able to access videos that your logged-in VK account can view. It does not bypass any privacy settings or access restrictions set by uploaders.
This repository is distributed under the proprietary SERP Apps license in the LICENSE file. Review that file before copying, modifying, or redistributing any part of this project.

VK (VKontakte) is the largest social network in Russia, with hundreds of millions of registered users across Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and other countries. The platform combines social networking features with a deeply integrated video hosting service where users upload, share, and watch a wide range of content including personal videos, music clips, movies, TV shows, educational lectures, and short-form entertainment. VK's video player streams content through adaptive delivery but does not offer any built-in download-to-file option for viewers. VK Video Downloader is being built to fill that gap for users who want a local MP4 copy of videos they already have access to through their account.
