FR: Build binary releases for selected platforms

Any chance you could add a release workflow to automatically build the binaries for Linux amd64 / arm64 and possibly Darwin on tagging? Thanks!

Hi @crohr, can you say more about what problem this would solve for you?

Given that this tool is only useful when plugged into a Go toolchain, and it is a single binary with no cgo dependencies, fetching a pre-built binary doesn't present obvious advantages over installing via go install. As this isn't an official product, I'd rather keep it simple and self-contained.

@creachadair thanks, I would ideally want to preinstall it on the images provided by RunsOn, so that I can auto-enable it for users that want to use GOCACHEPROG with the integrated S3 bucket provided by RunsOn. Right now I would have to compile and host the binaries myself and keep them updated with each release, I just thought it would be nice to have them on the official repo.

Thanks for the clarification. At this point, with the version still at v0, I prefer to have the users of the tool decide what version to use explicitly, rather than relying on a tagged release to be automatically pulled into an infrastructure deployment.

I expect the API will likely change more before it settles. Once it does, this would be a reasonable thing to reconsider. I'll leave this open as a reminder to do so when that time comes.
