The thief sometimes reacts inappropriately while unconscious

I managed to capture this sequence of messages:

>THROW KNIFE AT THIEF
You evidently frightened the robber, though you didn't hit him. He flees, but
the contents of his bag fall on the floor.
Your sword is no longer glowing.
The robber revives, briefly feigning continued unconsciousness, and, when he
sees his moment, scrambles away from you.

Also, should you really be able to frighten him off like that when you're in his lair?
