I actually wrote this code ages ago (and merged it into the RPi dev branch). But as it's a bugfix and work on RPi has been totally sidetracked (I do hope to get back to that at some point but who knows when...). I figured we may as well have the bugfix now. So I cherry-picked the commits into a new PR against master.
