improve message status indication in compact mode

With the new compact layout there's two things I noticed. The checkmarks state are both very low contrast so hard to tell what the checks are, and there is no indicator for sending, like maybe instead of the clock icon a few dots animating, . .. ... .. . .. ... Etc

Another is it seems to not always register as sent for a DM whose path is direct.
