  • I verified the JSDocs style guidelines (in STYLE.md) were followed
• If a new code pattern is added I verified it was agreed to be used by multiple Expensify engineers

@ZhenjaHorbach Sorry, my mistake. I initially tested it by pressing the header back button first and then swiping back, and it was working in that scenario.

I had to dig deeper to properly fix it. The issue turned out to be that usePreventRemove reacts to state changes, and we were passing stale values by using refs. In the original PR, refs were added to avoid re-renders on every keystroke, but that approach breaks usePreventRemove because it relies on reactive state.

Using state does introduce a performance trade-off (re-renders on keystrokes), but it’s required for usePreventRemove to work correctly. This aligns with React Navigation’s recommendation for native-stack and ensures proper reactivity.
