Summary

Ports and updates the Alpine/BusyBox shell compatibility work from the closed PR #22497 against current main.

This keeps the change focused on shell runtime compatibility:

• Use pgrep -P $$ instead of pgrep -g 0 so background PID discovery works with BusyBox pgrep.
• Wrap shell commands in a command group before running pgrep, so background children remain visible to pgrep -P $$.
• Gate shell PTY execution and shell tool schema generation on actual interactive-shell availability via isInteractiveShellEnabled().

Details

This is a synced replacement for the previously closed community PR #22497 by @mekineer-com. The original PR was closed by contribution policy before issue #24198 was marked for community contribution. The current branch starts from current upstream main and keeps the Alpine compatibility changes that still apply.

Per review, this PR no longer includes the unrelated CLI --version fast path or the Alpine-specific PTY package ordering change. The existing PTY import fallback remains unchanged.

The original shebang change from #22497 is already present on main, so this PR does not touch it.

Note on Alpine Docker npm tests: sandboxManager.integration.test.ts and shellBackgroundTools.integration.test.ts fail on Alpine Docker with ERR_IPC_CHANNEL_CLOSED / segfault (exit 139). Both confirmed pre-existing on upstream main under the same environment — not introduced by this PR. All other core tests pass on Alpine (shards 1–3: 1674 + 1832 + 2088 passed).

Windows (Node v22.14.0)

Thanks for the revew. You're right on both points.

I removed the unrelated CLI --version / -v fast path, so the existing version handling remains the only path and there's no added dead code.

I also removed the Alpine-specific PTY package ordering change. The existing @lydell/node-pty then node-pty fallback already covers the failure case, so that part wasn't necessary.

The PR is now scoped to the BusyBox-compatible shell changes only:

• use pgrep -P $$ instead of pgrep -g 0
• wrap the command in a command group so background child processes remain visible to pgrep
• gate interactive shell usage on isInteractiveShellEnabled()

I rebased on latest main and re-ran the focused validation:

• npm.cmd test -w @google/gemini-cli-core -- src/tools/shell.test.ts src/tools/shell_proactive.test.ts
• npm.cmd run typecheck -w @google/gemini-cli-core
• npm.cmd run lint -w @google/gemini-cli-core

I'm concerned that the agent (or a user triggering the run_shell_command tool) might execute a command that explicitly calls exit (e.g., bash -c 'do_something || exit 1').

Because the PR changes the wrapper from a subshell ( ... ) to a command group { ... }, an explicit exit command inside the { ... } block will terminate the entire wrapper script immediately.

This means the script will never reach the line:
__code=$?; pgrep -P $$ >${escapedTempFilePath} 2>&1; exit $__code;

Consequently, if the command included background processes (e.g., start_server & || exit 1), the CLI will fail to capture and return the Background PIDs to the LLM because pgrep is never run, and the temporary file will be left empty or uncreated.

You’re right: with { ...; }, an explicit exit inside the executed command can terminate the wrapper before the pgrep -P $$ step runs, which breaks background PID capture.

I’ll update this so the command executes in an isolated child context while the wrapper always continues to the PID-collection step, and I’ll add a regression test for a command like:

sh -c 'sleep 60 & exit 1'

Expected behavior:

• wrapper still writes background child PIDs
• exit status is preserved
• temp PID file is consistently produced

I’ll push that fix and tag you for re-review.

What changed:

• packages/core/src/tools/shell.ts
  • wrapper now defines exit(){ return "${1:-0}"; } in wrapper scope
  • keeps BusyBox-compatible pgrep -P $$
  • shell-escapes the temp PID file path
  • preserves the child command exit status via __code=$? and final exit $__code

Why this fixes your concern:

• an explicit exit inside the user command no longer terminates the wrapper before PID collection
• pgrep -P $$ still executes, so background PIDs are captured
• non-zero exit status is preserved and returned

Regression coverage:

Gemini spotted an issue:

The proposed exit() { return "${1:-0}"; } override is not a sound solution.

Redefining exit to return fundamentally breaks shell semantics because it does not stop the execution of subsequent commands within the command group.

For example:

If a command relies on exit to abort early after a failure, this hack will cause the shell to ignore the exit intent and execute the remaining commands. Sorry for the slow turnaround on this. You were right on both counts — the exit() override was never pushed, and it would've been the wrong fix anyway since it silently lets commands keep running after exit, which is dangerous for arbitrary shell input.
Went with an EXIT trap inside a subshell instead:

exit semantics are fully intact — the subshell still terminates immediately on exit. The trap just fires right before it closes and writes background job PIDs via jobs -p. Dropped pgrep entirely, so the BusyBox pgrep -g 0 vs pgrep -P $$ issue goes away with it.
89 tests passing, typecheck clean, lint clean. Also updated the PR description to reflect the actual implementation. @mekineer-com offered to run a repro matrix on Alpine 3.23 + BusyBox if you'd like real environment validation before merging

Alpine-side validation done on my VPS (Alpine + BusyBox sh 1.37.0), plus a quick bash parity check on the same host.

I tested the current EXIT trap + subshell pattern with these cases:

• background job + explicit exit
• explicit exit without background job
• non-zero command without explicit exit
• background job + success path

Observed results:

• Exit codes were preserved correctly in all cases.
• Background PIDs were captured when expected (jobs -p produced entries).
• No background PID capture when no background job existed (expected).

So from Alpine/BusyBox perspective, the current approach behaves correctly and avoids the previous pgrep portability problem.

Hey @scidomino, just finished the full validation across Linux, Alpine, and Windows — results are in the updated How to Validate section above.

Linux (node:22 Docker): 7489 core tests passed, 6859 CLI tests passed, zero failures. Typecheck, lint, and npx all clean.

Alpine (alpine:3.23 + BusyBox sh): Tested the shell wrapper across 5 real inline scenarios on both Docker and a real VPS — exit codes preserved correctly in every case, PIDs captured when expected, empty when no background job. @mekineer-com also independently validated on their own Alpine + BusyBox sh 1.37.0 environment and got the same results.

Two integration tests (sandboxManager.integration.test.ts and shellBackgroundTools.integration.test.ts) fail on Alpine Docker with ERR_IPC_CHANNEL_CLOSED and segfaults, but I confirmed both fail the same way on upstream main under the same environment — not something this PR introduced.

Windows: 88 tests passed, typecheck and lint clean.
